White Sox Cactus League opener rained out

AP

GLENDALE, Ariz. — After enjoying nothing but sunshine for the first 10 days of spring training, rain wiped out the Cactus League opener at Camelback Ranch Saturday.

Pitchers are staying on the schedule mapped out toward Opening Day, sending scheduled starter Reynaldo Lopez to work on the side instead with righty Dylan Cease starting the first game against the Reds Sunday in Goodyear, Ariz. Sunday’s forecast is sunny with a high of 65.

First lineup

Here was manager Rick Renteria’s first planned lineup of the spring: Luis Robert CF, Tim Anderson SS, Jose Abreu 1B, Nomar Mazara RF, Eloy Jimenez LF, Daniel Palka DH, James McCann C, Cheslor Cuthbert 3B, Leury Garcia 2B, Reynaldo Lopez P.

Renteria will likely utilize a different lineup against the Reds.

Giolito’s first side session

Unofficial Opening Day starter Lucas Giolito, slowed by a strained chest muscle, threw his first bullpen session as scheduled. Giolito said he feels “100 percent” healthy.

“I had a nice warmup in our new pitching lab [under a roof],” Giolito said. “Great facility. Simulated long toss into the net and threw 20 pitches off the hill, and it felt very good. I’m right on track. I was happy with my command of my heater. Offspeed pitches felt good coming out. Couldn’t ask for more.”

On deck

Sox at Reds, Goodyear, 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Cease vs. Vladimir Gutierrez. Also scheduled to pitch: Carson Fulmer, Jose Ruiz, Ross Detwiler, Matt Tomshaw, Bryan Mitchell, prospect Tyler Johnson.
