
The White Sox recalled catcher Seby Zavala from Class AAA Charlotte Saturday morning.
MINNEAPOLIS — The White Sox are calling up catcher Seby Zavala from Class AAA Charlotte, according to a source.
Zavala is expected to take the place on the 25-man-roster of Welington Castillo, who went n the the seven-day concussion list after taking a foul tip off his mask in the who left the team’s 9-4 loss to the Twins Friday.
Manager Rick Renteria said after the game that Castillo appeared to be OK. Castillo’s mask was broken on the foul tip.
“After the game he was initially checked out. He stayed here and felt some nauseousness and had a little bit of a headach so he was re-evaluated,” manager Rick Renteria said. “He has a mild concussion.”
Zavala, 25, is batting .218/.253/.506 with six homers in 21 games at Charlotte. He is the Sox’ No. 22-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He was a Southern League All-Star with Class AA Birmingham last season. A 12th-round draft pick in 2015, Zavala is a career .267 hitter with 51 homers, 86 doubles and 225 RBI in five minor league seasons.
“Well, here we go,” Renteria said. “He has shown a nice job of handling pitchers and working with them. Acutally a very simple swing he’s been able to manage down there. Hopefully both sides of the ball. I’m sure he will be energized and happy to be here.”
Castillo, 32, is batting .176/.286/.318 with three home runs in 26 games.
The Sox also activated left-hander Manny Banuelos from the 10-day injured list. Banuelos (2-3, 7.26 ERA) is the starting pitcher for the Sox game against the Twins Saturday afternoon.
