Moncada leads off
For the first time with both Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada in the lineup, manager Rick Renteria led off with Moncada. “I’m toying with both of those [combinations] and see how they settle in,” Renteria said. “Moncy likes to hit in the two slot and Timmy likes to hit in the two slot. I’m trying to see if I can get them both to settle in to one or the other.” Renteria wants speed at the top, and ruled out using Yasmani Grandal (.380 on-base percentage in 2019), who led off 13 times for the Brewers last season. Grandal will bat third, fourth or fifth, Renteria said. “No, he will not lead off for me,” Renteria said.
First-team blanked
With the exception of Nomar Mazara, Edwin Encarnacion (back) and Grandal (calf), Renteria started his regular lineup against Chris Paddack (three innings) but the Sox did score until the ninth on an RBI single by Class AA outfielder Luis Gonzalez, who is 5-for-10 with three walks this spring. Eloy Jimenez (4-for-12 this spring) had two hits, including a double to the right-center field warning track. The Sox were blanked 2-0 in a B game against the Brewers in Maryvale.
Pitched good
Dallas Keuchel allowed one run in four innings in his first start. Closer Alex Colome (three hits) and Jimmy Cordero each allowed a run in an inning of work. Aaron Bummer, Kelvin Herrera and Steve Cishek each pitched a scoreless inning.
Gio Gonzalez update
Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (shoulder), who threw a 30-pitch bullpen Sunday, will throw long toss Tuesday and is slated for bullpens Wednesday and Friday. His first start has yet to be scheduled, however.
