White Sox announce Emilio Bonifacio signing, bump Jordan Danks

Jan. 08--The Chicago White Sox officially announced the signing of infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio on Thursday to a one-year contract with a club option for 2016. The club designated outfielder Jordan Danks for assignment to make room for Bonifacio on the 40-man roster.

The news broke Monday of Bonifacio's contract, which will pay him $3 million in 2015 and includes either a $1 million buyout or a $4 million option for 2016.

"Emilio brings an excellent mix of versatility, speed and experience to our club which will provide (manager Robin Ventura) with additional flexibility with the roster this year," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. "We expect Emilio's ability to switch hit, help at multiple positions and steal a base to be very beneficial to us."

Bonifacio, an eight-year major league veteran of seven clubs, hit .259 with 24 RBIs, 47 runs scored and 26 stolen bases in 110 games with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves last season. The 29-year-old Dominican, who has a career .262 batting average, had his best season in 2011 while with the Marlins, when he hit .296 with 26 doubles, seven triples,78 runs scored and a .360 on-base percentage.

Danks, a seventh-round Sox selection in the 2008 draft, has played in 180 games for the Sox over three seasons, hitting .227 with eight homers, 26 RBIs and 41 runs scored.
