CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox avoided arbitration with pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, coming to terms on one-year deals with both pitchers on Friday.
Giolito and the Sox agreed to a $4.15 million deal while Lopez signed a $2.1 million contract.
Giolito, the team’s ace, went 4-3 with a 3.48 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 12 starts in 2020. He finished seventh in the 2020 American League Cy Young Award voting.
He pitched a no-hitter Aug. 25 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Guaranteed Rate Field, striking out 13 and allowing one walk in the 4-0 victory.
Giolito took a perfect game into the seventh inning in Game 1 of the AL wild-card series against the A’s at Oakland Coliseum. He allowed one run on two hits in seven-plus innings in the 4-1 win.
Lopez went 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA in eight starts in 2020. He was on the injured list July 27-Aug. 22 because of right shoulder soreness.
He was optioned to the Schaumburg training facility on Sept. 3, but returned Sept. 10 and pitched well in starts against the Detroit Tigers (no runs in five innings on Sept. 12), Minnesota Twins (three runs in 5 1/3 innings on Sept. 17) and Cleveland Indians (one run in five innings on Sept. 22 at Progressive Field).
He struggled in his final start of the regular season on Sept. 27, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings against the Cubs and was not on the postseason roster.
