
Catcher Yasmani Grandal has competed his minor league injury rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and will be in uniform when the White Sox host the Cubs Friday in the first of three games at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Zack Collins, who had become manager Tony La Russa’s second choice at catcher behind Seby Zavala during Grandal’s absence, was optioned to Charlotte to make room for Grandal on the active roster.
Grandal, 32, landed on the injured list on July 6 with a torn left knee tendon suffered on July 5 at Minnesota, and he had surgery the following day. He played in 11 games with Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte on an injury rehabilitation stint, hitting .303/.368/.424 with one home run and three RBI.
Grandal is batting .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI and 60 walks over 63 games this season. Over his last 26 games, he is hitting .256/.392/.561 with eight homers.
Collins, 26, was hitting .202/.324/.331 with four doubles, 11 doubles and 24 RBI in 72 games this season.
