The White Sox and Class AA Birmingham manager Omar Vizquel are parting ways after two seasons on the organization’s player development staff, a source confirmed.
The former star shortstop managed the Sox’ advanced Class A team at Winston-Salem in 2018 before getting promoted to Birmingham in 2019. At Winston-Salem, Vizquel was named Carolina League manager of the year after leading the Dash to an 84-54 record and a first-half title. A former first base coach with the Detroit Tigers, Vizquel was one of 10 candidates to interview for the job as Angels manager after the 2018 season.
In 2019, Vizquel advanced a level in the Sox farm system, along with many of the Sox’ top prospects. The Barons finished 64-72 for a third-place finish in the Southern League North.
“Omar and our organization agreed to head in different directions,” Sox director of player development Chris Getz said. “We appreciate what Omar did for the White Sox and our minor-league players, and we wish him all the best with whatever comes next.”
Vizquel, 52, was one of 14 former players who returned to the Hall of Fame ballot this week. He received 42.8 percent of the vote last year, his second year of eligibility.
