The burden of housework on wives was more than double than that of husbands even though the number of dual-income households has increased, the 2020 White Paper on Gender Equality has shown.
According to the white paper compiled by the Cabinet Office, there was no difference in the amount of time spent on housework between men and women in single-person households on working days. However, in the households of married couples without children, women spent 2.6 times more time performing domestic duties than men did. In households with preschool children, the amount of time that women spent on housework climbed to 2.8 times more, and households with elementary school children saw the difference increase to 3.6.
While men spent about an hour performing household chores, the amount of time did not change significantly in terms of marriage or a child's stage of growth.
The percentage of households in which wives took charge of "intangible housework," such as planning meals and keeping track of food and daily necessities, exceeded 80%.
