In Russia, the White Night festival is held in June, when the sun sets as late as 10pm, and the sky doesn’t get darker than twilight . The idea has spread around the world and Melbourne got its own festival in 2013.
Now in its fourth year, Melbourne will enjoy the equivalent of 100 hours of live entertainment – the city’s only all night culture celebration – from more than 220 performers. Streets, parks, cultural institutions and public spaces will come alive with music, food, film, art and light from 7pm until 7am the next morning.
Birrarung Marr park will be turned into an open-air dance floor that will go until dawn, while Bourke St Mall will be transformed into a jazzy New Orleans style street party. Lonsdale St will host a line-up of some of Melbourne’s best pop, rock and alternative musicians.
The Alexandra Gardens will be pushed back in time, with the city’s blues musicians setting up a speakeasy, reminiscent of the 30s and 40s. And St Paul’s Cathedral will host an illuminated opera, classical music and special collaborations between video artists and composers.
