Filming for The White Lotus season four is off to a rocky start. Just nine days into production, the team has gone back to the drawing board after Helena Bonham Carter stepped away from her role in the next instalment of the highly-anticipated series.
Bonham Carter was set to be one of the big names in the White Lotus‘ upcoming new season, with fans expecting her to bring her loveable quirkiness and spirit to her role.
But unfortunately, we’ll never know how she would have made the show her own.

A HBO spokesperson said in a statement published by E! News that the Harry Potter star wouldn’t be making an appearance on The White Lotus at all due to not aligning with her character.
“With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” the spokesperson said.
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.”
Yikes, how bad was the role if they’re not just recasting for it, but rewriting the character?
In a further statement, the representative said that while HBO, White and the wider production team are “saddened” by the outcome, they remain “ardent fans [of Bonham Carter] and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Fans expected Bonham Carter to play a leading role in the series, much alike the season three character Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey), who had a Southern drawl and lovability to her, despite being extremely high maintenance and extremely wealthy (or so she thought). Another character fans were comparing her to was season one and and two’s Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), who’s aloofness and iconic vulnerability made her the chaotic heart of the series.
While HBO and White haven’t commented, it’s reported that White specifically sought out Bonham Carter for the show and wrote the character she was playing, who was vital to the storyline, around her.
Bonham Carter was supposed to star in the The White Lotus alongside other big names including Kumail Nanjiani, Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Heather Graham and Steve Coogan as they all descend upon the French Riviera. The series is set during the Cannes Film Festival, with the luxurious White Lotus Resort taking over the luxurious 19th-century Saint Tropez palace-turned-hotel, Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez. Other filming locations along the French Riviera include Monaco and Cannes, and it will have a short stint in Paris, too.
Well, Bonham Carter might have prematurely checked out, but we’re curious to see who White will cast to take her place at the White Lotus du Cap.
