White Leeds woman shaken as far-right activists hurl abuse for supporting Black Lives Matter protest

A Leeds woman has shared her experience after being attacked by far-right activists on her way home from the Black Lives Matter protest.

Molly, 21, and her boyfriend, who did not want to be named, were subject to abuse from “seven white boys” who had spotted them holding a “Black Lives Matter” sign.

The boys followed the couple, who live in Leeds city centre, as they made their way home from the anti-racism protest, which was held in Millennium Square, and started hurtling at them abuse such as “slag” and “a tramp”.

A LeedsLive reporter was also attacked by far-right activists who were 'protecting' the cenotaph outside out the Town Hall. Read more about this here.

Despite the attack, Molly, who is white, said the protest was peaceful and praised the organisers and attendees who tried to stick to social distancing guidelines.

Molly said: “When we were walking home there was a group of people around the cenotaph who approached me and my boyfriend, shouting abuse at us. It was completely unprovoked.

“They were young lads and they looked rough and like they wanted to start something but we kept on walking away from them.

“It has been a bit surreal, its just bonkers.

“I feel burnt out. If that’s how they’re treating Black Lives Matter supporters then I can only imagine how they treat black people.

“One of the boys said to us 'you’re not even black' as if that meant I shouldn’t support the cause?

“It was such a shame that people tried to ruin it.”
