White House: Trump, Erdogan Discuss Bilateral Relations

US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks on Thursday on the importance of strong bilateral ties, the White House said.

"The two leaders committed to continue efforts to intensify cooperation on shared strategic challenges and to address the concerns of both countries that affect the bilateral relations," the White House said in a statement.

The two officials discussed their relations over a telephone call.

They agreed to fix sensitive issues that have tarnished relations between the two allies, Erdogan's spokesman said.

The White House did not mention Syria, where Turkey's military campaign in Afrin risks confrontation between the NATO allies who have been at loggerheads over the US policy in Syria and other issues.

Turkey on Sunday captured the Syrian Kurdish-held town of Afrin and vowed to expand its offensive to other areas, including to Manbij which is controlled by US-backed force dominated by Syrian Kurds.
