White House to get taller fence to keep intruders out

A new 13-foot tall fence is to be placed around The White House in a bid to keep out intruders.

The US Secret Service said the $64 million, around £50 million, construction project will soon begin on the barrier around President Donald Trump's home.

As well as being twice the height of the current fence it will also have wider and stronger pickets.

There are also set to be state-of-the-art security features installed as part of the barrier.

However, the Secret Service, which provides security protection for the president and the White House, declined to provide details of these.

The fence design won approval in 2017 from both the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission and active construction, once it begins in the summer, is expected to continue into 2021.

Initial construction will focus on the fence around the White House and its immediate surroundings.

Later work will bring improvements to fences around the Treasury Department and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, located on either side of the White House.

Officials concluded that a taller fence was needed after a series of breaches of White House security.

This included an incident in September 2014, when a Texas man carrying a knife scaled the fence, sprinted across the North Lawn and entered the White House.
