White House's Dr Deborah Birx dazzles internet with range of scarves as Instagram account set up in honour

Dr. Deborah Birx, White House coronavirus response coordinator, began trending on Twitter after many users felt she looked visibly uncomfortable with the suggestion (Picture: AP)

She's perhaps best known to the internet as the woman who wore a face of mild disbelief when US President Donald Trump discussed disinfectant as a possible treatment for coronavirus.

But Dr Deborah Birx, who leads the White House's coronavirus taskforce, has now hit the online spotlight for another reason altogether.

Dr Birx wears scarves to most briefings, tied in a range of different styles. Now an Instagram account has been set up to celebrate the accessory - and has gained more than 36,000 followers.

The account tells followers about each scarf, including the brand that makes them.

For example, followers were told that, on April 23 - the day President Trump talked about bleach - Dr Birx was wearing a scarf called "Retour à la Terre" by Hermès, a brand which has made several of her scarves.

At a briefing the day before, Dr Birx was wearing a Celine scarf. She has also worn items by designers Ann Hand, Emilio Pucci, Vera Neumann and Randall Darwall, among others, according to the account.

The account is run by Victoria Strout, who said the page had created "its own little community".

Followers often ask questions about the scarves, and help to identify the brand. Ms Strout even has tutorials on her website, showing how to tie scarves like Dr Birx.

Talking about the page's popularity, she said: "It’s a combination of people that admire Dr Birx and also like scarves.

"It's something that's lighthearted and can bring joy.

"Dr Birx is this really accomplished woman who speaks so clearly and concisely, and so, it's really cool to see people kind of recognise both."

Dr Birx is an experienced public health official.

Before helping lead the US response to coronavirus, she was the global AIDS coordinator, where she helped countries around the world tackle the virus.

And she is not alone as a professional woman in the public eye who wears statement items of clothing or accessories.

In the UK, former Supreme Court President Baroness Hale wore a spider brooch on the day the court ruled the Government's prorogation of Parliament unlawful in 2019.

Some suggested she had been sending a message about the ruling.

And on the day of President Donald Trump's impeachment, Speaker of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi wore a black dress with a brooch in the shape of a mace to symbolise the authority of Congress.
