White House placed 'on lockdown' due to airspace violation in Washington

The White House was placed "on lockdown" due to an "airspace violation" today.

Reporters in Washington DC said they had been locked in the building due to the security concerns.

NBC said that there was an "airspace violation reported in Washington, DC, and fighter jets have been scrambled".

Reporter Andrew Feinburg tweeted: "The White House appears to be on lockdown. The briefing room is currently locked."

While DC report JD Durkin wrote: "White House totally on lockdown. All press being sheltered in place inside briefing room. Similar reported response at the a U.S. Capitol + congressional office buildings."

It has since been confirmed that concerns about a small aircraft in the area sparked the incident, while the US Capitol was also evacuated due to the concerns.

Capitol Police sent a notification of a potential threat shortly after 8.30 am local time.

The evacuations were ordered and people were allowed back in after about 30 minutes.

The US Secret Service said personnel at the White House were told to remain in place.
