
A flock of white-fronted geese fly over Miyajimanuma pond in Bibai, Hokkaido, early on Tuesday morning. The pond, designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, is the final Japanese stopover on the migrant birds' annual journey from Honshu to Russia's far east. About 65,000 have gathered at the pond this year, blanketing the dawn sky when they take off from a feeding site each morning. They will head for Russia in early May.
