White City Manchester: Retail park closes after faulty electric cable sparks power cut

A shopping centre in Manchester has been sealed off this afternoon after a faulty electric cable sparked a power cut.

The White City Retail Park Old Trafford has been partially sealed off, and emergency services are currently believed to be at the scene following the incident.

About 25 properties in the area suffered a power cut at 1.41pm due to a fault with an electric cable underground, a spokesperson from Electricity North West said.

Power has since been restored as works are being carried out to repair the damaged cable.

Cadent Gas, who have engineers at the scene, say they believe the incident is not related to the gas network.

Images shared on social media show a large cordon and emergency vehicles at the scene.

A spokesperson for Cadent Gas told the M.E.N: "We have arrived on scene and are checking our assets but there is no suggestion that this is connected to the gas network."

Transport for Manchester confirmed emergency services were at the scene as part of Chester Road remains closed.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are at the scene to assist with traffic flow.

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: "We received reports of a power cut at 1:41pm affecting 25 properties on Chester Road due to a fault with an underground electricity cable.

"We responded immediately and using our automatic restoration systems power was restored to all properties within the hour at 2:28pm and now, teams of engineers are on site carrying out repair work to the damaged cable."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 1.40pm on Friday, May 6, fire crews were called to an incident near a commercial property on Chester Road, Stretford.

“Two fire engines from Stretford and Sale stations arrived quickly at the scene.

“Firefighters remain in attendance and are working with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and Trafford Council to make the area safe.”

The shopping centre has a number of popular outlets including Aldi, Currys, M&S, Nando's, The Gym and Furniture Village..
