Whitchurch park could get an upgrade as project aims to include the community

A park in south Bristol could be getting an upgrade after new designs have been submitted.

The Whitchurch Village Council has asked residents to have their say about their improved playpark plan on Norton Lane by answering a short questionnaire.

The project aims to engage the community to create a park that is suitable for everyone.

Covering some 1.6 acres, the park is used by families and children throughout the adjoining area.

The current site offers children’s climbing frames, swings and park equipment, as well as a number of picnic tables and a large field area for ball games.

But the new design includes a sensory sound flower, a wheelchair friendly roundabout with seat and scooter, and toddler zone.

There has also been a design upgrade proposed for the multi use games area which features porous tarmac surfacing with line markings for Football, Basketball and Netball.

Jodie Moss, who has recently moved to the area, is excited about the plans but has raised her safety concerns.

She said: “I love the idea, but I really hope they put a crossing in place on that busy road. I have three small children and I won’t walk to that park with them yet because I can’t stand the thought of trying to get across that road.”

Maurice McDowell said it would “be nice for the kids to play there”, whilst Donna Baber says it could “definitely do with an update”.

Feedback on the proposed plan is already in full swing with residents saying that they would like a bigger slide, footbridges and more picnic benches to be considered.

One Facebook user said she was concerned the park would be overtaken by ‘travellers’ and hopes a ‘strong gate or lock’ will be added to the plan.

Sue Dyer, Clerk for Whitchurch Village Council, aims to progress with consultations, on the initial design drawn up, in 2020.
