Whitby floods: Yorkshire town virtually cut off after extreme weather

Flash flooding has hit the seaside town of Whitby virtually cutting the town off.

Police have warned the North Yorkshire town is only accessible via one route by 4x4 vehicles after heavy rainfall hammered the area, causing several road closures.  

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews responded to more than 10 affected areas last night but the situation is improving.

Additional police and coastguards have been drafted in to help wand search and rescue teams have also been mobilised.

Flooded properties in the area are being pumped out by the fire service teams who also rescued two people from a car that had been trapped by the rising water, the Telegraph reported.

A Met Office amber warning for heavy rain has been put in place until noon on Tuesday in the Angus, Perth and Stirling areas of Scotland.

There is also a yellow "be aware" warnings for parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, the South West, South East and North East of England.
