Whitburn boss Darren Wilson praised his side’s ability to win ugly after inflicting a first defeat of the season on Syngenta.
But he says that will count for nothing if they drop points this weekend away to Livingston United.
The Burnie claimed a 2-1 win over the East of Scotland Conference X title favourites at Central Park with Reece Duncan netting the decisive goal from the spot.
It continued the gaffer’s unbeaten start to life in the hotseat but he admitted the contest was far from a classic as they picked up three valuable points in their promotion bid.
Speaking to the Courier, he said: “It was a really scrappy game, which can often be the case once you get into December and the pitches aren’t at their best.
“The conditions didn’t allow for us to play the style we want but it was a really satisfying win in a game that felt like a bit of a cup final.
“There was a lot of tension and battling all over the park and we showed that we can come out on top in games like that.”
He added: “It wasn’t the best performance and it wasn’t the type of football we want to be playing but the effort and determination from the players was exemplary.
“It was a keenly contested game. Daniel Potts has made two tremendous saves for us, but on the other hand Darren Liddell hits the post when it was 0-0. It was a game where there really wasn’t much between the sides at all so it’s hugely satisfying to come out on top.”
It’s a trip to Station Park on Saturday for the Burnie, with Wilson knowing every point gained - and lost - will be crucial with the top four Conference X teams currently separated by just five points.
He commented: “We’ve become the first team to beat Syngenta and it’s a crucial three points, but it would just get cancelled out if we got to Livingston United and get beat.
“Every game is absolutely massive. It’s such a tight race that every point you lose or gain is going to have a huge impact on the table.”
He added: “That makes for a really exciting season and run of games between now and the end of the campaign.
“That’s what you want, these are the sort of games you want to be involved in and it’s a brilliant group of guys we’ve got at this club. It’s honestly very difficult to pick the team and bench - but that’s a good problem to have.”
