Whitburn Band to perform in Edinburgh ahead of 150th anniversary

Two of the best brass bands in the world are looking forward to performing together in a concert in Edinburgh.

The Fairey Band, who have been National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain on nine occasions, and Scottish Open champion Whitburn Band, conducted by Bryan Allen, are playing at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in the city’s Palmerston Place on Saturday, November 30, from 3pm.

Founded in 1937 and associated with the Fairey Aviation Works in Stockport, Fairey’s is one of the most famous names in world brass banding.

The band has enjoyed tours around Europe, Canada and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Whitburn Band has been Scottish champion 20 times in its history. With its roots in the coal mines of West Lothian, Whitburn celebrates its 150th anniversary next year.

Both bands are looking forward to delivering a diverse programme to the audience, with the music of Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Disney movies on show.

Whitburn Band chairman, Charlie Farren, said: “Everyone at Whitburn is looking forward to welcoming The Fairey Band to Scotland for what is sure to be a fantastic concert.”

Garry Cutt, the professional conductor of Fairey’s, added: “The Fairey Band and I are really looking forward to this collaboration, with two of the finest bands in the country on show.”

Tickets for the concert, available at the door, are priced at £12 and £8 concession.
