Whitbread will close its Brewers Fayre, Beefeater and Cookhouse + Pub restaurants after Friday

Whitbread will close its Brewers Fayre, Beefeater and Cookhouse + Pub restaurants after Friday evening to help in the fight to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The hospitality giant said it will temporarily close around 400 restaurant sites across the UK - with Table Table another brand shutting.

But Premier Inn hotels - a brand also owned by Whitbread - will remain open.

A Whitbread spokeswoman said: “Whitbread has entered these unprecedented times in a very strong financial position, and we are taking decisive action to protect the interests of our guests, our staff and our business.

“Following the recent, updated Government advice on social distancing, we have taken the decision to temporarily close our restaurants commencing Friday night.

"All of our Premier Inn hotels will remain open."

UKHospitality has prevailed upon the UK Government to announce an employment support plan to help protect livelihoods and the 1 million-plus jobs now at risk in UK pubs, restaurants, bars, hotels and leisure attractions – without delay.

Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality said: “Our analysis suggests in excess of one million jobs are now on the line.  Job cuts are extraordinarily deep and they are happening now – today and tomorrow, and are snowballing."
