Whisky firm release new dishwasher tablet-shaped cocktail capsules

They might look like dishwater tablets – but a distiller is insisting its new whisky cocktail capsules are the “delicious” new way to enjoy a dram.

Glenlivet distillery have created biodegradable capsules, encased in a bubble of edible seaweed.

The capsules burst open in the mouth to release the liquid inside – and have been billed by makers as the future form of “sustainable whisky”, ditching the need for a glass, ice or stirrer.

The cocktails come in three flavours – citrus, wood and spice.

The citrus capsule combines the Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve malt, distilled lemon, Fino sherry, the aperitif wine Lillet and a bergamot cordial.

But critics have likened the cocktails to the US “Tide-pod challenge” which saw youngsters chewing laundry capsules from American brand Tide as a dare.

One sceptic wrote on social media: “So Tide pods for whisky then ... not sure that’s gonna fly.”

A spokesman for Speyside-based Glenlivet insisted their new invention is “delicious”.

He said: “They are exciting to try. A bit unexpected. If you’re not prepared for it, it’s a bit of an assault on your senses.

“The response has been really positive. The capsules are designed to explore the future of sustainable packaging and how we drink Scotch.”
