Whirlpool issues recall of over 20 models of washing machines over potential fire risk

Whirlpool has recalled a further 21 models of washing machines on Wednesday following "in-depth safety checks".

The company already recalled certain Hotpoint and Indesit models after a flaw in the door-locking system was identified late last year.

This creates a risk of the machine overheating and potentially catching on fire.

It's understood this latest recall could affect up to 500 appliances.

The models that have been added to the recall are:

A spokesperson said: "Anyone with a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine should call 0818 903 281 or visit https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.ie to check if their appliance is part of the recall.

"Certain washing machines that were manufactured between October 2014 and February 2018 are affected. Whirlpool brand machines are not affected.

"Customers should check their washing machine to confirm if they need to take action, even if they have already done so."

People who own one of the affected washing machines are advised to unplug it and stop using it.

Customers will need to book a "remedy appointment" to have their machine assessed with slots available Monday to Friday.

The company stressed that they would replace or repair affected washing machines for free and that their staff will practice social distancing and use PPE on house calls.

Jeff Noel, Vice President of Whirlpool, said: “We remain committed to this recall in spite of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Product recalls explained

“With people spending more time at home under the current social distancing measures, it’s more important than ever that this safety issue is tackled swiftly.

“The wellbeing of our customers and our staff is our paramount concern and we can assure people that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the recall can continue to be carried out safely.

“We are deeply sorry to our customers for the concern and inconvenience this recall may cause but we continue to take action because people’s safety is our top priority.”

Whirlpool added that they are taking "numerous steps" to continue its business operation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson said: "Whirlpool is following all government guidelines on social distancing, and has strict health and safety processes across its entire supply chain.

"All engineers and delivery teams are equipped with PPE including face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser, and are practising social distancing at all times during their work."

Whirlpool are offering contactless delivery and collection processes to minimise risk to both staff and customers.

They say appliances can be delivered to a secure location outside a customer’s home - such as a garage or garden - so that staff do not have to enter their home.
