Whirlpool recall thousands of tumble-dryers including Hotpoint, Creda, Swan and Proline after fire risk concerns

Whirlpool has issued a massive recall of tumble-dryers which are said to pose a fire risk.

The Government has said it would be recalling 500,000 dryers which could set alight.

The recall relates to certain models of Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline dryers built between 2004 and 2015. These have been blamed for about 750 fires during that period.

Five million dryers had a fault that allows fluff to touch the heating element and has caused at least 750 fires. The Creda and Hotpoint brands are also affected.

Remaining owners of unmodified machines are being urged to "make contact immediately".

Anyone with an affected dryer must unplug it immediately and stop using it.

Jeff Noel, vice president of Whirlpool, said: "The crucial message is please contact us immediately if you still own one of these tumble dryers and haven't already had it modified or replaced by us."

To find out if your machine is affected you can call 0800 151 0905 or visit the Whirlpool website.
