Which undrafted free agent has the best chance to make the Dolphins?

The Miami Dolphins added a slew of undrafted free agents over the weekend, hoping to flesh out their roster and find a few relative bargains along the way. The expectation for undrafted players isn’t ever going to be one that suggests high end production, although a handful of diamonds in the rough can be found on an annual basis.

Do the Dolphins have any of those types? Most will point to Colorado State wide receiver Preston Williams, who had excellent production during his only season with the Rams before declaring early.

But don’t sleep on Maryland linebacker Tre Watson. Watson, a transfer from Illinois, shined bright during his one and only season with the Terrapins. With 5 interceptions, Watson illustrated a nose for the football in underneath coverage, particularly in zone. The Dolphins’ linebackers in recent memory haven’t always had a lot of success defending the pass — perhaps Watson’s efforts in shallow zone can help him to carve out a specific role on this Dolphins roster.

At the very least, he’s a candidate for special teams coverage units. Watson has a lot of confidence in his pads and tackling ability and you’ll never catch him slacking in pursuit. Added value in these areas will give him a prominent edge over Williams and some of the other UDFAs hoping to make room for themselves on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster.
