Who won the TV election? Well, in terms of audience, we know the answer because the BBC1’s coverage, anchored by David Dimbleby, attracted 4.3m viewers to ITV’s 898,000, as the Guardian reported the day after (8 May).
But statistics don’t necessarily tell the full tale, so the Media Society is staging a debate on the issue on Wednesday (20 May) with something of a star line-up.
The speakers (offering views from the sofa) include Peter Snow, the retired former BBC election guru; Sue Cameron, former Newsnight and Channel 4 news presenter; Alexandra Henderson, the BBC’s former general election results editor; and John Mair, the BBC’s former election hub producer.
And the speakers who will offer views “from the bridge” are Alex Chandler, general election editor at ITV News; John McAndrew, executive editor, Sky News; Ian Rumsey, executive producer ITN Productions for Channel 4; and Sam Woodhouse, the BBC’s general election results editor.
In the chair will be Stewart Purvis, professor of TV journalism at City University London who was formerly chief executive of ITN and one-time editor of Channel 4 News
The debate will take place at London’s Broadgate Tower between 6-8pm on Wednesday. To buy tickets, go here.
