Which sports were cut from Commonwealth Games 2026?

The Commonwealth Games takes place in Glasgow, but featuring a slimmed-down programme of events. Glasgow stepped in as hosts after the Australian state of Victoria backed out three years ago, due to the rising cost of hosting the Games.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham featured 19 sports but the programme has been reduced to 10 in Glasgow - with six featuring integrated para-sports.

The Glasgow list includes: 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball, artistic gymnastics, athletics and para athletics (track & field), bowls and para bowls, boxing, cycling track and para cycling track, judo, netball, swimming and para swimming, and weightlifting and para powerlifting.

That means nine sports that took place in Birmingham have been removed from the schedule, including badminton, beach volleyball, cricket, hockey, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling.

However, that does not include the various events that have been cut from the final list of disciplines, such as aquatics - diving, cycling - mountain biking and road cycling, and gymnastics - rhythmic gymnastics.

Glasgow will offer a record number of medals in para-sport, 47, but the overall number of gold medals, 215, is down from the 261 on offer when Glasgow last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Unlike in 2014, Hampden Park will not host in the track and field. Instead, the 11,000-spectator Scotstoun Stadium will stage the athletics as well as the biggest home star of the Games, new mile world record holder Josh Kerr.

The Commonwealth Games will take place across four venues around Glasgow: Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Gasgow International Arena and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), including The Hydro, SEC Armadillo, and SEC Centre.
