Which Roald Dahl films are on Netflix? Deal sees £100m+ spent on back-catalogue

Netflix has landed a golden ticket by striking an exciting deal with the Roald Dahl Story Company to show the author's back-catalogue and create new productions with his intellectual property.

It paves the way for the Dahl's entire big and small screen adaptations to join the streaming platform's ever expanding array of titles.

Dahl died in 1990, but his works have continued to be transformed into TV and film productions.

On the agreement, Netflix tweeted: "Excited to announce that the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) and Netflix are joining forces to bring some of the world's most loved stories to current and future fans in creative new ways."

"We are now about to visit the most marvellous places and see the most wonderful things."

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Luke Kelly, managing director of the Roald Dahl Story Co. and Dahl's grandson, said in a joint statement:

"These projects opened our eyes to a much more ambitious venture - the creation of a unique universe across animated and live action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theatre, consumer products and more."

This builds upon a 2018 deal which saw Netflix pay a rumoured nine-figure sum for just 16 of Dahl's works, including 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Of which there is set to be an animated TV series made by Academy Award winning filmmaker Taika Waititi.

Netflix is also working with Sony on an adaptation of 'Matilda the Musical'.

The late author's books have been translated into 63 languages and sold more than 300million copies, with his grandson claiming one is sold every 2.6 seconds.

The RDSC has plans in place for 19 TV programmes, films, stage shows and live experiences and in time, the entire back-catalogue of Dahl film and TV works will be housed on Netflix.

However, until then, streamers can watch:

  • Esio Trot
