Which position groups does Miami rank in the bottom 3 in cap spending?

At this point, it’s well established that the Miami Dolphins’ payroll is going to be uninspiring in 2019. There are some contract extensions that the Dolphins can finalize and beef up the cash spent, it would be a great way to capitalize on the down year of spending.

But how exactly does Miami stack up relative to the rest of the league position by position? By grouping the team into several positional groups, Miami’s spending can be much easier to digest. The groups in question:

– Quarterback
– Running Back
– Wide Receiver
– Tight End
– Offensive Line
– Defensive Line
– Linebacker
– Secondary
– Special Teams

In five of these nine position groups, Miami’s current allotment against the 2019 salary cap ranks in the bottom 3 in the NFL. Quarterback (29), running back (30), offensive line (32), defensive line (31) and special teams (31) all come up short relative to the rest of the clubs.

The good news? Miami has young, promising talents in RB Kenyan Drake and LT Laremy Tunsil who will help to beef up that spending when the time comes.

One area Miami is not hurting in spending — the secondary. The team’s $43.761M in 2019 cap dollars is third highest in the league. This is, of course, courtesy of Reshad Jones’ albatross of a contract. Jones counts for more than $17M against the 2019 salary cap by himself.

It has been reported that the Dolphins would like to move on from Jones after June 1st, when they can trade him and save $13M against the cap in 2019. But any cap dollars the team saves there would be well spent extending CB Xavien Howard, who is entering the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $1.95M in 2019.
