Which players should Arsenal go for in the transfer window? – in pictures

Arsenal transfers: Leighton Baines
Leighton Baines, left-back, Everton, £15m
The 27-year-old has arguably developed into the best left-back in the Premier League, challenging Ashley Cole's status as first choice for England. He has created more chances in the league than any other player this season and would present an upgrade on Kieran Gibbs and André Santos. He has been heavily linked with Manchester United

Arsenal transfers: Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw, left-back, Southampton, £8m
The England Under-17 international has hugely impressed since breaking into the Southampton team this season. He has been labelled the 'new Gareth Bale' having emerged from Saints' academy. Chelsea and Manchester City have monitored his progress, admiring his pace and ability on the ball

Arsenal transfers: Mathieu Debuchy
Mathieu Debuchy, right-back, Lille, £10m
Newcastle were close to signing the France international during the summer but refused to meet the transfer fee demanded by Lille. Debuchy, 27, was superb during Euro 2012, winning the man-of-the-match award in the opening game with England

Arsenal transfers: Adil Rami
Adil Rami, centre-back, Valencia, £10m
Another France international, the centre-back was manager Laurent Blanc's first choice at Euro 2012. He is physically imposing, standing at 6ft 3in, and has Champions League experience with his current club. He can also do this

Arsenal transfers: Yann M'Vila
Yann M'Vila, centre midfielder, Rennes, £15m
The 22-year-old has repeatedly been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Wenger a known admirer. He is fiercely competitive in the middle of the pitch, an area Arsenal have lacked bit for some time, but also boasts considerable skill. Discipline is an issue, however – he has been banned until June 2014 from playing for France after an unauthorised night out while on Under-21 duty

Arsenal transfers: Marouane Fellaini
Marouane Fellaini, midfielder, Everton, £25m
The Belgian has been one of the players of the Premier League season so far, since the opening day when he terrorised the Manchester United defence while playing as a central attacker. Fellaini, 25, still considers his best position to be as a defensive midfielder, but his physique and ability in the air offers him a rare versatility and he could strengthen Arsenal in a number of areas

Arsenal transfers: Raheem Sterling
Raheem Sterling, winger, Liverpool, £15m
The 17-year-old has been a revelation since Brendan Rodgers gave him his Liverpool debut this season, starting 14 of the club's 15 Premier League matches. But discussions over a new contract are not going smoothly, and Man City are one of the clubs keeping an eye on the situation

Arsenal transfers: Wilfried Zaha
Wilfried Zaha, forward, Crystal Palace, £15m
Palace manager Ian Holloway last week warned Wenger off trying to sign the Ivory Coast-born forward, who made his debut for England last month. But, one imagines, it is only a matter of time before the 20-year-old joins a big Premier League club, with Arsenal's need most pressing

Arsenal transfers: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, striker, Schalke, contract expiring soon
The Dutch international was the top scorer in the Bundesliga last season and has already given Arsenal a close-up demonstration of his eye for goal by scoring in each of the two games the clubs played in the Champions League group stage

Arsenal transfers: Thierry Henry
Thierry Henry, striker, New York Red Bulls, loan
The Arsenal legend rejoined the club last January and in a relatively successful move, bringing his steadying experience to the dressing room. Wenger has already discussed the possibility of re-enacting that short-term loan in the MLS off-season

Arsenal transfers: Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski, striker, Borussia Dortmund, £15m
The Poland international is one of the most sought-after strikers in world football, having led Dortmund to successive Bundesliga championships. Manchester United are believed to be leading the list of suitors, with the 24-year-old reportedly available for a cut-price £12-15m because he has only 18 months left on his contract

Arsenal transfers: Fernando Llorente
Fernando Llorente, striker, Athletic Bilbao, contract expiring soon
Bilbao manager Marcelo Bielsa has denied blackmailing the 27-year-old by refusing to play him until he signs a new contract at the club, but whatever the truth behind the situation Llorente is keen to leave. His contract expires at the end of the season, and Juventus are keen to take him to Serie A

Arsenal Transfers: Edinson Cavani
Edinson Cavani, striker, Napoli, £30m
Cavani was the star of Napoli's run to the knockout stage of the Champions League last season, eliminating Manchester City along the way. He is one of several brilliant Uruguay forwards playing in Europe, and has already scored 10 goals in 12 Serie A matches this season. He would be an instant upgrade on Wenger's current options up front. Whether Arsenal could compete for his signature is another matter, mind
