Which of Tottenham's U23 players could still catch Pochettino's eye after Leicester defeat?

Missing players

This was a Spurs side shorn of plenty of talent as they took on Leicester at Stevenage's Lamex Stadium.

Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga are now considered first team squad members and will rarely feature for the development squad.

Harvey White and Jamie Bowden, who both played on the pre-season tour to Asia with Mauricio Pochettino's side, were not involved.

That could well be with the U18s taking on Arsenal in a tasty north London derby on Saturday morning.

Goalkeeper Brandon Austin has been involved with the England U21 squad this week and could find himself part of the Spurs first team squad tomorrow against Watford, potentially as an emergency back-up or even more depending on whether Pochettino decides Michel Vorm is ready yet.

Tottenham v Watford: Mauricio Pochettino press conference

A lack of ball retention

Missing both Bowden and White means Spurs were without two very good passers of the ball in their engine room.

Much of the play in the centre of the pitch was sloppy and quick breaks often floundered before they reached the final third.

Tashan Oakley-Boothe, the first millennial to have played competitively for Tottenham's first team, sat in front of the back four back playing short passes to those ahead of him in the midfield but they just didn't show the quality required to make something of their opportunities.

Little attacking quality

In front of a crowd of 615, this was not a night for wonderful finishing in the final third at either end when the service was decent.

Rodel Richards has become the Spurs U23s' main striker this season with Parrott taking the step up and has bagged three goals this season, including one against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Youth League.

However, he barely saw the ball against Leicester and left the pitch looking very sorry for himself on 75 minutes, replaced by Rayan Clarke.

Those who did see the ball in the final third made a mess of it, Paris Maghoma's shot out of the ground summing up Tottenham's evening in front of goal.

Leicester were not much better, their first second goal coming with a scuffed shot from Callum Wright which rolled over the line.

Their second was far more clinical, substitute Josh Eppiah picking out George Hirst for a low finish past Spurs goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie.

Who can step up from this team?

Unfortunately right now for this matchday squad in particular the answer is still none of them at the moment.

There is some talent in there, especially in defence in Malachi Walcott and Luis Binks, but they've still got a long way to go as very young defenders.

Timothy Eyoma, captain on the night, and Oakley-Boothe have both made their Tottenham first team debuts but unless they have a big surge in their development, which could happen as they only turn 20 in the new year, their future senior appearances are likely to be found out on loan as the path to Tottenham's first team is a busy one.

There's absolutely no shame in that either. The goal of every Spurs player in the academy is to end up playing for the first team regularly but that's a rare achievement and the secondary goal of making their way in the professional game elsewhere is just as important.

Older development squad players at the club like Jack Roles, George Marsh, Kazaiah Sterling and Anthony Georgiou have shown this season that they are more than good enough for League One and Two football and their education at Spurs should lead to good professional careers.

Of those not in the squad at Stevenage, teenagers Bowen and White have both been involved with the first team in the summer and will continue to work towards getting more chances.

It's up to the rest of this development squad, many of them either 18 or 19, to follow the lead of the loan players and that of Oliver Skipp, Tanganga - who has made a late burst into the first team set-up at 20 - and Parrott and continue to work hard to make the most of their potential.
