Which local workforce is winning the sustainable travel race?

More than 1,500 people are logging their journeys to work in Edinburgh as part of the A Better Way To Work Challenge.

Now in its third and final week, The Bike Station's challenge has made some interesting discoveries from the 13,000 trips logged.

Of those taking part, the Causewayside bike recylcling charity's data shows:

30% take the bus
29% walk to work
20% cycle
10% take the train
8% carshare on work trips
44,936 kilograms of CO2 have been saved

You can also see the travel data for each employee of every company taking part, for example here is how Scottish Gas is getting on. Its 800 members of staff, based in Granton, have collectively burned 25,910 calories during the challenge.

There are also statistics for staff at the likes of Gorgie City Farm, The Skinny and tram firm Transport Initiatives Edinburgh.

Currently, Scottish Gas and Royal London are battling it out to top the leader board in the 500+ employees category. The Scottish Parliament staff are in third place.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Scottish Court Service and PWC are leading the 200-499 size category.

The challenge is free to enter and asks entrants to log any trip made sustainably between 7 and 27 February. This means anyone that travels to work by bus, by bike, by foot or by sharing a car can get involved.

It is based on participation, not miles, so organisations need to encourage as many employees as possible to take part to win. Journeys can even be logged retrospectively so those new to the challenge could still topple the current leaders.
