Which? have revealed the cheapest supermarket for branded products in 2019

Opting for supermarket own brands is a sure fire way to save some money, but most of us enjoy a few market leading products in our weekly food shop from time to time.

Whether it is our choice of tea bag, the spread we put on our toast or even our loo paper it is hard to find a home without one recognisable brand in it.

Depending on how many you buy it could be important to know which supermarket is selling your favourite products for the cheapest price, the MEN reports.

Consumer expert Which? tracked thousands of branded supermarket products across six of the UK's biggest competitors to crown its winner.

Sainsbury's came out on top, while Asda came second and Morrisons took third place.

The research only included shops which stocked the list of branded items online - which ruled out including budget giants Aldi and Lidl.

Which? experts compiled a list of 53 common branded grocery items, from Andrex toilet tissue to Weetabix breakfast cereal, and found that the goods cost just £107.01 a month at Sainsbury's on average across the year.

When supermarkets reduce their food

That's compared to the supermarket that came out as the most expensive - Waitrose - where the items totalled up to £10.80 more.

That could potentially cost shoppers an annual total of £129.60 more than if they had done the equivalent shopping at Sainsbury’s.

Consumer group Which? ran a similar price comparison last year, and found that Morrisons was the cheapest supermarket of 2018, followed by Asda and then Sainsbury's.

Aldi and Lidl continue to grow their market share in the UK, but neither offer an online shopping platform for the branded items included in the Which? study.

The list of items included Alpen Original Muesli, Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Ice Cream and Dolmio Bolognese Sauce among others.
