Which foreign languages will earn you the most money?

Learnt a new language during the lockdown? Well, this could be just what you need to stay ahead of the crowd if you’re looking for a new career venture – a new study by the online educational provider, Preply reveals.

Preply has ranked the UK’s five most lucrative languages. And, with the average UK salary currently at £30,420, the insight also highlights how much your salary, on average, could increase if you’re able to speak one of the languages.

Arabic revealed as the UK’s most lucrative language

Arabic has been unveiled as the most lucrative language across the UK. In fact, if you’re able to speak Arabic, your salary, on average, could potentially increase by 74%.

The top five sectors for Arabic-speaking candidates are:

  1. Teaching
  2. Accounting and finance
  3. IT
  4. Sales
  5. PR, advertising, and marketing

Mandarin revealed as the UK’s second most lucrative language

Mandarin is the second most lucrative language. If you’re able to speak Mandarin, your salary, on average, could increase by 47%.

The top five sectors for Mandarin-speaking candidates are:

  1. Teaching
  2. Hospitality and catering
  3. Logistics and warehouse
  4. IT
  5. Engineering

Dutch revealed as the UK’s third most lucrative language

Dutch is the third most lucrative language. If you’re able to speak Dutch, your salary, on average, could increase by 45%.

The top five sectors for Dutch-speaking candidates are:

  1. Accounting and finance
  2. IT
  3. Sales
  4. Social work
  5. Teaching

German revealed as the UK’s fourth most lucrative language

German is the fourth most lucrative language. If you’re able to speak German, your salary, on average, could increase by 36%.

The top five sectors for German-speaking candidates are:

  1. Teaching
  2. IT
  3. Engineering
  4. Sales
  5. Accounting and finance

French revealed as the UK’s fifth most lucrative languages

Lastly, French is the fifth most lucrative language. If you can speak French, your salary, on average, could increase by 34%.

The top five sectors for French-speaking candidates are:

  1. Engineering
  2. Teaching
  3. IT
  4. Accounting and finance
  5. Sales

Other lucrative languages include Spanish, Italian and Japanese.

Kirill Bigai, CEO and co-founder at Preply, said: “It’s interesting to see which languages are the most lucrative across the UK and just how in-demand they are.

“Being fluent in two or more languages will always give you an edge over a monolingual candidate when it comes to job interviews and these opportunities exist in many businesses from health care, to education and tourism. As outlined, language skills also lead to an increase in salary.

“Whatever your career aspiration might be, with the additional skill of being able to speak another language, you’ll certainly thrive and reach your goals.”
