All four nations of the United Kingdom have been placed under national restrictions after a surge in coronavirus cases.

The increase, caused in part by a fast-spreading variant of Sars-CoV-2, prompted England to abandon its tier system in favour of national lockdowns on 4 January. This followed similar national lockdowns implemented in Wales and Northern Ireland on Boxing Day.

Scotland, meanwhile, placed all mainland local authority areas into tier 4 on 4 January, in effect implementing a national lockdown.
