Which car models thieves commonly go for - and riskiest areas where they strike

It might surprise you to know that the most commonly stolen car in 2018, was not a luxury vehicle.

The type of car more vehicle thieves opted for over anything else, was not a sports car or a flashy 4x4, it was in fact a Ford Focus.

Yep, you read that right.

According to police figures which have been analysed by GoCompare, the humble Ford Focus and several other models of Ford were the target of choice for those stealing cars in the UK, with a whopping 1,952 Fords stolen across the country.

The research looked at Freedom of Information data from 17 of the 43 police constabularies across England and Wales, including Dorset, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

It showed that a total of 25,684 vehicles were reported stolen across these 17 constabularies last year - with Kent Police recording the highest number of vehicle thefts after 3,444 cars were taken.

But despite this, it was an area in Staffordshire that was found to be one of the riskiest places in the UK to leave a car.

A total of 55 cars were stolen from High Street in Staffordshire in 2018.

Three other Staffordshire locations made up the top three hotspots for stolen vehicles, with 106 thefts across them all.

Outside of there, thieves were also found to commonly strike on Cornwall Road and Edgehill Road in Leicestershire, with 22 cars stolen from these streets in 2018.

Also in the top risk areas were Anlaby Road in Humberside, High Street in Bedfordshire, Station Raod in Northumbria and Great Howard Street in Liverpool.

As well as the Ford Focus, other cars that were targeted by criminals included the Ford Fiesta, Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.

It is thought these makes were stolen most frequently due to the popularity of them and the sheer volume of them that are out on our roads.

There were also a few flashier cars that were stolen, such as 35 BMW 1 Series and 29 Land Rover Range Rovers.

Other models on the list included an Audi A3, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Renault Clio, Vauxhall Zafira, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall Corsa and Land Rover Defender.

The Defender was stolen the most from Dorset in 2018, but the number of thefts in this area overall was considerably lower than the other more populated constabularies.
