Which Bristol stores are helping the elderly and vulnerable during the coronavirus outbreak

Businesses across the Bristol area are launching free delivery services to help those who do not want to venture out during the coronavirus pandemic

Many people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, are choosing to stay indoors rather than venture out to get their provisions in a bid to avoid contracting the virus.

Major supermarkets already offer home deliveries, but now local stores in Bristol communities are following suit – with many dropping the delivery charge.

Bristol Live is compiling a list of delivery services being offered by businesses during the coronavirus outbreak.

East Street Fruit Market

Darren Jones who runs the East Street Fruit Market in Bedminster is offering a free delivery service to elderly and vulnerable shoppers or those who are self isolating.

Normally a minimum spend of £10 is needed to qualify for a free delivery.

But this will be waived during the pandemic.

Darren said: “We want to help those elderly and vulnerable people in our community who perhaps may be scared to go out due to Coronavirus.

“We wanted to do our bit to help.

“The community has been good to us for the last 30 years and this is about us giving something back.”

Darren said the store was also happy to pick up other provisions such as milk, bread and meat from other nearby stores to add to deliveries as necessary.

Burchills fruit and veg shop in the centre of Nailsea has also changed its arrangements to allow people to make orders online, via email or over the phone.

The delivery service is free with a minimum spend of £10 on the order.

Burchills manager Debbie Reeves said: “We don’t normally do phone, email or online orders.
