Whey Aye developers 'totally committed' to Tyneside amid coronavirus epidemic

The team behind the Whey Aye are "totally committed" to building the £100m development in light of the coronavirus epidemic.

Work on the Quayside development, which would feature Europe's biggest observation wheel as its centrepiece, is scheduled to start this summer.

Hundreds of local jobs are expected to be created by the project, granted planning permission by Newcastle City Council last July.

However despite the Covid-19 crisis causing economic chaos, the team behind the ambitious development are confident they will deliver a "world-class development" for Tyneside.

“The health and safety of our people, partners and the local community where we will build is our primary concern," said World Wheel Company Newcastle chief operating officer, said Nigel Hartley, Newcastle chief operating officer of the World Wheel Company, the company behind the development.

"We will therefore continue to closely monitor the situation created by Covid-19 and adhere to UK government public health guidelines.

“Rest assured we remain totally committed to building a world-class development focused on delivering the greatest benefit for the city of Newcastle, its people and its business community.”

A ChronicleLive exclusive revealed plans for the development, set to be located on the old Spillers flour mill site.

Besides the 460ft wheel, the wider ‘Giants on the Quayside’ development will also include a 39 ft human-shaped steel statue called The Geordie Giant and state-of-the-art attractions - including a virtual golf club..

There's been a mixed response to the site. Many, including Alan Shearer, have praised the vision although over 100 people objected.

Some claimed it would be an 'eyesore', while another even feared it could become a terror target. The council dismissed those objections.
