Whetstone blaze: Police probe fatal fire as man dies in north London

A man has died days after a house fire in north London, with detectives investigating the cause of the blaze.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to a fire shortly after 1am on Saturday on Weirdale Avenue in Whetstone.

Two men were rushed to hospital by paramedics following the blaze and the brigade confirmed on Monday that one of the men involved had later died.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had rescued a man from the building using a fire escape hood and most of the ground and first floors of an end-of-terrace house were damaged by the blaze, the LFB said.

It has not been confirmed if this is the man who died.

Firefighters began to leave the scene by 2.34am on Saturday, 90 minutes after they were first called to the fire.

Fire crews from Southgate, Barnet, Finchley and Hornsey fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police.

A Met spokesperson said: “Police were called by the London Fire Brigade at 01:17hrs on Saturday, 4 October following reports of a fire.

“Officers arrived at the property with the London Ambulance Service and a man in his 90s was taken to hospital where he sadly died.

“His next of kin are aware. An investigation into the fire remains ongoing.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance service said: “We were called at 1.08am on Saturday 4 October to reports of a fire on Weirdale Avenue, Whetstone.

“We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART). We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated two patients at the scene and took them to hospital.”
