Where you can pick up a Brexit 50p coin as 3 million enter circulation

More than 3million brand new fifty pence pieces will enter circulation on Friday to mark Britain's exit from the EU.

The coins, produced by the Royal Mint, have been dubbed ' Brexit 50p' editions and will start to appear in loose change from January 31.

The design features the words "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" followed by the date of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union.

It will be available in Brilliant Uncirculated, Silver proof and Gold proof editions.

However, members of the public will also be able to get their hands on them at face value as 3million will also enter general circulation on January 31.

Members of the public will also be able to get their hands on them at face value from Friday, January 31 (Sunday Mercury)

These will enter banks, Post Offices and shops nationwide, with a further 7 million entering circulation later this year.

When Mirror Money asked the Post Office which branches will be stocking them from Friday, it said it was unable to comment.

A spokesman told us the coins will be dispatched with normal stock - and that no specific branches will be receiving 'Brexit 50p bundles' on Friday.

Friday marks the fourth time that a commemorative coin has been produced to mark the UK's relationship with the European Union.

The Royal Mint produced a coin when the UK joined the European Economic Community in 1973, created a design for the single market in 1992, and to mark the UK’s 25th anniversary of joining the EU in 1998.

Clare Maclennan, at The Royal Mint said: "The Royal Mint has been marking significant events in British history for over 1,000 years, and has a history of commemorating the UK’s relationship with the EU through coinage.

"It felt fitting, that following the decision on 23rd June 2016 for the UK to leave the European Union, for The Royal Mint to produce a new 50p coin to commemorate this historic moment."

As Master of the Mint, chancellor Sajid Javid was given the very first batch of Brexit coins this week - one of which he will present to the Prime Minister.

More than 13,000 people have already registered their interest in a commemorative version of the coin which is available to buy from the Royal Mint.

Commenting after seeing the coin for the first time, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid said: "Leaving the European Union is a turning point in our history and this coin marks the beginning of this new chapter."

As part of the launch, the Royal Mint will also open its doors for 24-hours to let people strike their own 'Peace, Prosperity and Friendship with all Nations' commemorative coins.
