To help stop the spread of coronavirus, Scots are urged to regularly test themselves using l ateral flows.
These rapid tests are used to identify asymptomatic cases of Covid, which in turn helps to reduce transmission.
Those who have any symptoms should instead book a PCR test to determine whether or not they have the virus.
Unlike PCRs - in most cases- lateral flow tests can be carried out from the comfort of your own home.
But where can you get test kits and should you use lateral flows?
Here is everything you need to know.

Where you can get lateral flow test kits
There are a number of ways to get your hands on rapid later flow coronavirus tests.
- Ordering online
Possibly the easiest way to make sure you have enough test kits in your home is to order them online.
You can do this on the Government website here.
Getting the tests online will allow you to order one pack per day. Each pack contains seven individual tests.
By ordering online, the kits will be delivered to you at home.
If you cannot use the online service, call 119 (free from mobiles and landlines).
Lines are open every day, usually 7am to 11pm however opening hours will be limited over New Year.
- Collecting test packs
Other ways to get rapid lateral flow tests
You are able to:
- collect tests from a pharmacy
- collect tests from a community centre, such as a library
- get a test at a site
If you’re collecting tests, you can collect 2 packs at a time which will give you 14 tests in total.
Some sites have been experiencing shortages over the festive season, however there are a large number of places you can visit to collect kits.
When you should take a lateral flow test?
Through the pandemic, Scots have been urged to take regular lateral flow tests and record the result online to help keep a close eye on Covid cases throughout the country.
Specifically, rapid tests should be taken when you are more likely to catch or spread the virus.
For example, do a test before you:
- mix with people in crowded indoor places
- visit someone who is at higher risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19
You should also do daily rapid tests if you've been in contact with someone with COVID-19 and are either:
- fully vaccinated
- under 18 years and 6 months old
You should take the test on day one and day seven after being in contact with an infected person.
