Where we stand on Rafa Benitez's future after reports from France linking him with Ligue 1 clubs

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is understood not to have held talks with an agency to look for a job in France - despite reports last night.

Suggestions in France were that Benitez is exploring the possibility of managing in Ligue 1 next season, something he is expected to play down today at his Press conference.

However, while Benitez is receptive to sit down and talk with United once the club have secured Premier League status, he has not advanced with discussions about his future.

What is clear is that there remains on offer to stay on the table for Benitez if the former Real Madrid boss wants to sign it.

As reported on Chronicle Live on Sunday, Benitez is the club's number 1 choice to be in charge next season even though Lyon boss Bruno Génésio has been heavily linked with the post in France.

Newcastle chiefs will not want to wait for too long to get Benitez's future thrashed out once the club become safe.

Plans for next season are already under way behind the scenes and many supporters have renewed their season tickets without even knowing who will be in the dugout with officials keen to put the uncertainty behind them.

Benitez, a meticulous operator, is also aware of the need to plan ahead and when asked for an update on his contract on Monday night at Arsenal he said: "There will be nothing before Crystal Palace."

In his main Press conference he had also said: "Nothing has changed.

"We are exactly the same as we were some days ago.

"We are in the same position, the same situation."

While that did not sound too promising, it is believed Benitez is prepared to stay if some conditions are met about the club's transfers next season.

Benitez wants more control over the transfer kitty and more flexibility on the recruitment blueprint.

United have yet to comment on reports that a new two-year deal was offered to Benitez.
