Prince Philip, 99, was the was the longest-serving consort in British history.

But where was he born and where did he grow up?

The duke was born on June 10, 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu.

He was a prince of Greece and Denmark and his parents were Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

He was exiled from Greece as a child and grew up in France, Germany and Britain.

The prince began his education in France but, at the age of seven, came to live with his Mountbatten relatives in England, where he attended a prep school in Surrey.

He was then sent to Schule Schloss Salem in southern Germany in 1933.

This school had the 'advantage of saving school fees' because it was owned by the family of his brother-in-law Berthold, Margrave of Baden.

With the rise of Nazism in Germany, Salem's Jewish founder Kurt Hahn fled persecution and founded Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

Prince Philip moved there after two terms at Salem and was educated there until early 1939.

He then completed a term as a cadet at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, before repatriating to Greece, living with his mother in Athens for a month in mid-1939.

In September, he returned to Britain to resume training for the Royal Navy and graduated from Dartmouth the next year.
