Newcastle will soon be bathed in a sea of lasers when the New Year light show gets underway. Projected from more than 80 lasers, the brand-new light show will take place every hour for six hours over the weekend.
The show, which is returning for the second year, has taken the place of the official fireworks display. The fireworks were cancelled last year over fears of big crowds as Covid cases continued to rise, and this year organisers have decided to stick with the light show over fireworks.
Organisers at the council decided that the environmentally friendly show is much more accessible for families and ensures the safety of pets, who can be spooked by the loud bags and whistles. So if you fancy heading down to watch the show, where should you go?

The display is said to be visible for miles around in ideal weather conditions. However, if you're heading down to the Quayside to get the best view, the organisers, including the show's creator Seb Lee-Delisle, recommend one particular stretch of Quayside directly opposite the HMS Calliope naval base.
Below is a map showing the stretch of the road as well as the key locations for some of the lasers. There are more than 80 lights installed along the Quayside that make up the show.
For those who love to get involved in the action, there'll be some interactive lasers switched on for you to play around with. Set up on the Tyne Bridge, the interactive lasers can be controlled via your smartphone from the Laser Light City website.
