The 2008 reopening of the Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux (+33 557 304444, ghbordeaux.com, from €228), with its prime position, Michelin-starred restaurant, chic brasserie, luxurious spa and wine concierge – who can open doors to elusive grand chateaux – spurred a wave of designer hotels in Bordeaux.
Hôtel Burdigala (+33 556 901616, burdigala.com, from €230), a short walk from the centre, has emerged from a revamp, ditching its staid decor for warm browns and serving grands crus by the glass at its bar.
Jean-Pierre Xiradakis, owner of shabby-chic bistro La Tupina, has opened the Maison Fredon (+33 556 91 5637, latupina.com, from €180) in an 18th-century building, with five bedrooms in which beams meet modern art.
L'Hôtel Particulier (+33 557 882880, lhotel-particulier.com, from €168) is a luxury B&B near the cathedral. Five rooms and suites combine high ceilings, parquet and original fireplaces with minimalist modern beds and funky lights. Across the courtyard are simpler apartments (from €97).
