Thousands have signed a petition for an extra Bank Holiday Monday if England wins the Euros.

Wednesday night saw Gareth Southgate 's team secure victory over Denmark after striker Harry Kane scored in extra-time to make it 2-1 at Wembley.

They will now play in the final against Italy on Sunday at 8pm.

However, reports have now suggested that if England wins their match against Italy, the country could be granted an extra Bank Holiday.

Politico reports that rumours of a national day of celebration were circulating around Whitehall late last night.

A petition has since been created and within hours has received more than 70,000 signatures.

Boris Johnson praised Gareth Southgate's management style, saying the England manager has done an "absolutely outstanding job" during the Euros while not ruling out a bank holiday in its honour.

Asked if it could soon be Sir Gareth, the Prime Minister told broadcasters: "I obviously wouldn't want to anticipate anything that the honours people may decide.

"But clearly I think Gareth Southgate has done an absolutely outstanding job.

"What seems so amazing to me is how he varies it, he mixes it up, and plays a different series of options depending on the match in question.

"So best of luck for Sunday."

Asked about the possibility of a bank holiday on Monday, he said: "I think that would be tempting fate, let's see what happens."
