Where to see Battle of Britain Memorial flypast route for Vera Lynn's funeral today

A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, consisting of a spitfire and a hurricane, will fly past the funeral of Dame Vera Lynn today.

Known as the Forces' Sweetheart for her efforts rallying the troops during the Second World War, Vera Lynn passed away on 18 June at the age of 103.

She will be laid to rest with a private funeral in Sussex.

A cortege bearing her body will leave her home at 11:40am, and arrive in the village of Ditchling, where she lived, at midday.

It will pause to allow residents to pay their respects, before continuing onto Brighton, where the funeral will be held.

Servicemen and women will line the route to the chapel, while a Royal Marines bugler will play music inside.

The funeral will be attended by a representative from the Ministry of Defence alongside Lynn's family.

A larger memorial is planned for later in the year, once coronavirus restrictions have been lifted.

Flypast route

A hurricane and a spitfire will complete a flypast to pay tribute to Dame Vera Lynn.

The planes will take off from RAF Coningsby, in Lincolnshire, and fly over the funeral procession while it is paused in Ditchling in East Sussex at midday.

It is not known how many passes they plan to complete.

There are only 12 airworthy hurricanes left in the world, two of which are operated by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight display team.

Dame Vera Lynn shot to fame with popular wartime songs including We'll Meet Again and (There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover.

She continued to release music after the war ended, and enjoyed a successful career for over 90 years.

In 2000 she was named the Briton who best exemplified the spirit of the 20th century.
