Where to get street food quickly in Newcastle as city hosts Heineken Champions Cup Rugby fans

If you're one of the thousands visiting Newcastle for this weekend's rugby then we expect you'll be spending a fair bit of time enjoying our city's watering holes.

Nothing wrong with that, either.

With a 7.45pm and 5pm kick-offs , fans may be tempted to skip dinner out, or swerve a sit-down lunch to pack in more time in the pubs and fanzones.

But that doesn't mean you have to go hungry, or fill up on chain junk food.

Newcastle's city centre and Quayside has some quality options for a quick bit of street food, which won't cost you the earth either.

The Grainger Market

If you're in the centre of town on Saturday for the Heineken Cup Newcastle's covered market is a great shout for a quick bite.

Inside, there are a range of stalls selling food from around the world - at very competitive prices.

The pizza by the slice stall is particularly popular, with huge slices of freshly made pizza sold for around £2.

The market's authentic Chinese dumplings, a Turkish cafe, a tapas bar, sandwich stalls and Indian street food are also big hits.

You'll find the Grainger Market on Grainger Street, close to Monument.

The Hawker Market - or HWKRMRKT - in Gateshead (By The River Brew online)

Some of the biggest names in North East street food run stalls at Gateshead Quays' By The River Brew Co.

By The River Brew Co houses a craft ale bar and its 'Hawker Market' - and has one of the best views of Newcastle you can get.

Among the traders are Lola Jeans, who recently won Newcastle's annual burger competition and Scream for Pizza, who triumphed in the pizza contest. Dabbawal, a highly rated Indian street food restaurant, is another big hitter which serves up at By the River on weekends.

The HWKRMRKT is open until late on Saturdays too, so could be a good option after the Heienken Cup Final.

Stack

Take a look around the restaurants in the Stack

Built out of Shipping Containers, Stack mixes bars with street food vendors.

There is pizza, sushi, Lebanese, BBQ and more.

Stack is in Pilgrim Street, close to the bottom of Northumberland Street.

Stack is open until midnight, so Leinster and Saracens fans will have time to get food there after Saturday's match.

Monument

Blackett Street is closed to traffic this weekend, allowing it to accommodate a food market.

Stalls selling takeaway food are open this weekend.

Spectator Plaza - outside St James' Park

A mini fanzone has popped up close to St James Metro station, behind the stadium's Gallowgate End.

It has bars, music and food.

Vendors include fish and chips from Corbridge's Angel, an Indian street food gazebo, gourmet burgers and a pizza trailer.

At Strawberry Place, near St James' Park Metro, this will host the pre-match build-up with BT Sport presenters.
