To find the gnome, you'll particularly want to be in the first room up the stairs. This room contains the big world map and your pet Odysseus. Look for the computer table setup against the wall on the left (from the wall with the map). Then look behind the open door that leads up from the stairs. The gnome will be behind the door, and you'll pick it up to trigger a secret achievement.
